Today Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio confirmed the loss of Mario Edwards Jr to a hip injury which is slated to have the second year defensive end out 4-6 weeks.
"Mario is going to be out a few weeks, that's unfortunate," said Del Rio following Monday's practice. "He will return and is not going to require surgery. He's going to be out, so that's that."
The injury has been descibed as a hip strain, which means nothing was torn. Had there been a torn muscle, a surgery would have been likely, and it would have also mean an extensive recovery.
As of right now, his return could be as early as the season opener in New Orleans or he could miss the first couple games of the season. Obviously the team is hoping for the former.
In his absence, Denico Autry is expected to take over as the starter. Although Autry has worn a cast through training camp since injuring his wrist this offseason. The injury had him on the PUP list for the first few days of camp.
