Raiders preseason week two: Five key match-ups vs Packers

New, comments

It's gameday people, we are just hours away from the Raiders 2nd preseason game with the opponent being the Green Bay Packers. As the team hits up Titletown, we hit up 5 key matchups for the viewers to watch out for in this game. Make sure to get the conversation started and mention any matchups that you are interested in watching that are not mentioned here in the comments section below!

Jihad Ward vs. Josh Sitton

Last week was very interesting to watch Raiders 2nd round rookie Jihad Ward in his first NFL game action against the Arizona Cardinals. He was slow off the snap but when he got himself in position he was able to show off his brute strength. This week he will be going against Josh Sitton, one of the best guards in the league. It will be a great test to see what the rookie has learned from his first game action and performing well against a pro bowl guard like Sitton would give a lot for Raiders fans to be excited about.

Karl Joseph vs. Jared Cook

The Raiders have had trouble with tight ends for what seems like forever, and the Packers have a couple of talented ones to contend with. Jared Cook is one of the few free agents that Ted Thompson brought in and is one of the more underrated tight ends in the league and provides the new type of athletic, big bodied pass catching tight end that can wreak havoc on a defense.

This will be a good chance to see rookie Karl Joseph in coverage against tight ends with Jared Cook being as big and athletic as he is. Cook is exactly the type of player that has decimated the Oakland defense in the past so it is a great test to see if Joseph will make a difference in a glaring area of need for the Raiders. Can the 1st round rookie hold his own against a very talented pass catching tight end like Jared Cook or will we see another game where the Raiders are unable to contain the opponents tight end?

David Amerson vs Davante Adams

David Amerson got big money from the Raiders when they extended him this summer and did not have a great game against the Cardinals. That's ok, it is just preseason after all. However, it would be great to see Amerson have a bounce back game in this one against the Packers solid receivers.

Jordy Nelson was just activated off the PUP list for the Packers but won't see action yet in the preseason, which leaves Randall Cobb and Devante Adams as the top two receivers for Green Bay. With Cobb likely being covered by Sean Smith that leaves Amerson against Adams. Devante Adams has been disappointing so far for the Packers but he is still a big, fast receiver who should be a good matchup for Amerson to get back on track against.

Amari Cooper vs. Damarious Randall

Another player who did not seem fully prepared for the first preseason game for the Raiders was Amari Cooper. He had a key drop on 3rd down and seemed like he should have been able to catch a deep ball along the sidelines but instead allowed himself to drift out of bounds. Some people have disliked what they saw out of Cooper wondering if he is putting in the required work at all times, this game against a rising star CB for the Packers in Demarious Randall is a chance to stop those whispers before they become an issue. Look for Cooper to make amends for his poor outing last week.

Matt McCants vs Datone Jones

There is no sugar coating it, Matt McCants was straight up awful against the Cardinals. It isn't going to get any easier for him with Packers OLB/DE Datone Jones being on the 2nd unit for the Packers. Jones hasn't lived up to his 1st round draft status for Green Bay but is still a force to be reckoned with especially for a non starter. McCants's struggles last week were so bad that he now needs a huge bounce back performance or else he will be at risk of not making the team at all this year.
