Ok, Jack, you got us. After Karl Joseph was the first team safety all through training camp and preseason, it was Nate Allen who topped the depth chart put out by the team for the season opener. But come the game, it was neither Joseph nor Allen who took the field to start. It was Keith McGill.
The former fourth round pick out of Utah switched from cornerback to safety this offseason and it appears he has completed that transition. He played all but two snaps on defense and added 12 special teams plays -- the combined snaps led the team.
As for his performance, Pro Football Focus liked what they saw from him -- giving him the highest grade of the Raiders' defenders. Granted that was in a game where the defense gave up 423 yards passing and 4 touchdowns to Drew Brees. Still, not bad for the guy who was working with the third team defense just a couple weeks ago.
