Late in the Raiders’ 35-28 loss to the Falcons Sunday, the Raiders lost their top performing cornerback. David Amerson left the game with a head injury and didn’t return.
“He was hurt at the end,” Del Rio said of Amerson. “The last drive. . . he was not in. He was held out and he’ll go through the [concussion] protocol.”
The injury occurred on the Falcons’ final touchdown on a 13-yard run by Tevin Coleman. Following a touchdown drive by the Raiders, the Falcons took the field again attempting to drain the final 2:12 off the clock. They needed to pick up essentially one first down to do it. That pass went to Mohamed Sanu for 15 yards with DJ Hayden in coverage.
Had Amerson been in the game, there’s a good chance Hayden would not have been. Would Amerson’s presence have made the difference? Perhaps. But that first down allowed the Falcons to drain the clock to :10 seconds before punting it away.
Amerson has been the Raiders best cornerback through the first two weeks of the season. He had 8 tackles, 3 passes defended, and an interception in the end zone in this one to keep the Raiders in the game for a while. They can’t afford to lose him, so his status for this week will be one worth keeping a close eye.
