Among the Raiders transactions to get down to 53 players, they waived/injured Neiron Ball and James Cowser. Both players have cleared waivers and have been placed on injured reserve.
Ball had missed the past couple weeks with an undisclosed injury. He had missed part of last season with a knee injury that had kept him out the entire offseason as well.
Cowser was injured in the team’s final preseason game. It was reportedly a concussion. This keeps Cowser on the team’s injured reserve for the entire season (call it a redshirt year). The rookie out of Southern Utah showed flashes of great potential throughout the offseason and the preseason.
Another option for either player would be to be released with an injury settlement. That was make the player a free agent, free to sign with any team. Should the Raiders look to bring that player back, they would have to wait until six weeks after the injury settlement was done. For instance, if it’s a 3-week injury settlement, the couldn’t re-sign the player for nine weeks. So, obviously that’s not ideal should the team plan to bring the player back into the fold as they would risk losing them to another team.
