Raiders name four 2016 team captains as voted on by teammates

Each year, four team captains are chosen for the season. Those players are chosen via votes from their teammates. The four players selected by the Raiders represent four different areas of the team:

QB Derek Carr

C Rodney Hudson

DE/LB Khalil Mack

S Reggie Nelson

Carr is a no-brainer to represent the offensive skill players. As is Khalil Mack to represent the defensive front seven.

There were several to choose from along the offensive line, including Donald Penn, Kelechi Osemele, and Hudson.

Nelson is a bit a surprise considering he just joined the team and didn’t see the field during the offseason and missed much of the preseason too. But he is the most veteran of the players in the secondary, entering his tenth NFL season. He’s also familiar with Jack Del Rio from their time together in Jacksonville.

“I think in Reggie [Nelson’s] case, as a senior guy in the secondary, he has a calming demeanor about him,” said Del Rio. “Really professional in the meetings and practices and taking charge and making guys accountable, making guys want to communicate with each other. I think those are real positive things for us.”
