The only holdover from the previous staff in 2015 was defensive backs coach, Marcus Robertson. He not only returned, but he was promoted from assistant DB coach, with Charles Woodson’s high praise and recommendation.
Woodson retired after last season and just one year on the job without the Hall of Fame bound defensive back, Robertson has been ousted as well, according to the Sporting News’s Alex Marvez.
The Raiders’ secondary struggled last season, and in his postseason press conference, Jack Del Rio called the unit out specifically as the number one problem on the Raiders’ defense.
“Explosive plays, whether you like it or not, they always come back to the secondary.,” said Del Rio.
He even mention the DB coaches taken blame for those issues.
“DB coaches will talk about it all the time like, ‘We’re the ones when you’re playing out there on that island, there is no hiding from it.’ You’re there, that guy gets behind you somehow, and everybody in the stadium can see it. There’s really no sugarcoating that.”
Defensive Coordinator Ken Norton Jr was retained, which suggests Del Rio is laying the bulk of the blame for the defense ranking 26th in yards allowed on the secondary and its coach.
As of now, the team still has Rod Woodson on staff as assistant DB coach. Woodson was the team’s DB coach for one season in 2011.
In other coaching news: Bill Musgrave will not return as offensive coordinator.
