Yet another award for Khalil Mack on his fantastic 2016 season. This time it’s the Sporting News which has named him their Defensive Player of the Year.
Said David Steele of Sporting News:
His outrageous combination of speed and strength made up for a world of team-wide defensive shortcomings, and it further established him as one of the focal points of an emerging NFL power. Had quarterback Derek Carr not broken his leg in the next-to-last regular season game, Mack might still have been wreaking havoc this past championship weekend.
Mack finished with 11.0 sacks last season, which included an 8-game sack streak. He added an interception returned for a touchdown, five forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries along with 77 combined tackles (56 solo).
The third year pro was named the Defensive Player of the Month for November on to his second consecutive All Pro and Pro Bowl season.
Here’s how the Sporting News top five in voting went:
1. Khalil Mack
2. Von Miller
3. Eric Berry
4. Landon Collins
5. Vic Beasley
This is the second Defensive Player of the Year Award this offseason for Mack. He was also named the PFWA Defensive Player of the Year.
