Raiders punter Marquette King on pace to break NFL record that has stood for 77 years

Four games into the season Raiders punter Marquette King is on a serious record pace both in average yards per punt and net yards per punt.

King is is currently averaging 52.6 yards per punt with a net average of 47.5 yards per punt. Should he maintain that over the rest of the season, it will be the greatest season both in gross punt average and net average in NFL history.

As Josh Dubow of the Associate Press notes, the previous records for best gross was set by Sammy Baugh who averaged 51.4 yards per punt. That record has stood since 1940! Currently King is averaging more than a yard over that (52.6).

The best ever net average in a season belongs to Rams three-time All Pro punter Johnny Hekker (46.0 net). King is currently averaging a yard and a half net more per punt (47.5).

King is also tied for 5th in the league with 9 punts inside the 20 with just one touchback on 19 punts. And his high punts have caused a couple muffs as well. Now if he can just cut out the unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
