I guess the Raiders wanted to shake things up. We expected to see some increased snaps by rookie round two pick Obi Melifonwu in his second game since returning from injured reserve. He’s getting that and more, starting at cornerback in Mexico City against the Patriots.
The former cornerback was primarily a safety in college and was drafted as a safety and figured to face Rob Gronkowski. Obi lined up at left cornerback in place of the injured David Amerson with TJ Carrie starting on the left.
Tom Brady went to Melfonwu’s receiver Brandin Cooks on the second play of the game, picking up 5 yards. Three plays later, Melifonwu was lined up across from Rex Burkhead and gave up a 10-yard reception.
He was winded and called to be taken out after 8 plays. Not a good start for Melifonwu so far. The Patriots drove for a touchdown with Brady going 9 of 9 for 61 yards and a touchdown.
