Former Raiders DC Jason Tarver retained on new 49ers staff by Kyle Shanahan

New, comments

The 49ers like Jason Tarver so much, he will be again be retained while much of the staff has turned over with new head coach Kyle Shanahan in place.

This isn’t the first time Tarver has been brought back by the 49ers. He got his first NFL job in 2001 with the 49ers as a offensive quality control coach before eventually landing as the team’s outside linebackers coach for six seasons from 2005-10.

After one season in the college ranks at Stanford, he got his first NFL defensive coordinator job with the Raiders, where he would spend the next three seasons on Dennis Allen’s staff.

Following the 2014 season, Tarver was ousted with the rest of the Raiders’ staff and, of course, the 49ers brought him back, this time as linebackers coach for new head coach Jim Tomsula, who lasted just one season. Tarver was retained as linebackers coach under head coach Chip Kelly, who also lasted just a season in San Francisco.

Now, he’s back again, this time with his title changed to Senior Defensive Assistant. He will be serving under his seventh 49ers coaching staff heading into his 13th season with the team over the past 17 years.

The only head coach over that time he never served under was Jim Harbaugh. Which happens to be the only seasons since 2002 that the 49ers had winning records.
