After reported interest from Raiders, Martellus Bennett signs with Packers

New, comments

No free agent on the market had more reported interest from the Raiders than former Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett. Bennett was even said to be interested in going to Oakland as well. But before that could happen, Reggie McKenzie’s old team swooped in and stole him away.

Up to this point, it looked like the Packers were going to hold onto tight end Jared Cook. But their negotiations hit an impass and the Packers appear to have moved on, setting their sights on Bennett instead.

Bennett would have been a great signing by the Raiders as a one of the league’s top tight ends.

The interesting thing here is Jared Cook’s availability is intriguing. He rose up in the playoffs for the Packers, catching 18 passes for 229 yards and 2 touchdowns in three starts.

It’s possible that playoff performance could have him looking to break the bank and if so that could be an issue. Otherwise he would be a solid addition and not a bad consolation prize for losing out on Bennett.
