Today the Raiders officially signed free agent quarterback EJ Manuel. The veteran QB will compete with Connor Cook for a backup behind starter Derek Carr.
Manuel was a first round pick out of Florida State by the Bills in 2013. After some promising moments but overall struggling as a rookie, he was benched his second season for free agent addition, Kyle Orton, and then Tyrod Taylor came in and took the job in 2015 and hasn’t let go of it. The Bills made a long term investment in Taylor this offseason and let their former top pick go.
Manuel’s addition makes sense due to his familiarity with Raiders offensive coordinator Todd Downing having been coached by Downing who was the QB coach in Buffalo in 2014. Manuel made four starts that season, throwing for 838 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions and the Bills went 2-2 with him at QB that season.
