Kicker Giorgio Tavecchio is back for another go round with Raiders

New, comments

It’s becoming an annual ritual that former Cal kick Giorgio Tavecchio is added to the Raiders offseason roster. They added him to the roster Wednesday for the fourth year in a row.

Tavecchio went undrafted out of Cal in 2012. He spent time in camp with the 49ers, Packers, and Lions before first being signed by the Raiders midway through the 2014 preseason as an injury replacement. He was waived four days later among the team’s final roster cuts.

Since then, they have added the left footed kicker each offseason to kick behind Sebastian Janikowski throughout the offseason program and training camp. The first time he was added in 2015, some wondered whether he could replace Janikowski. That obviously didn’t happen, but they like Tavecchio enough to continue to bring him back.

Tavecchio has held his own in these camps and earned his right to join the team. Being left-footed is important because Janikowski is as well.

Janikowski is approaching 40 and entering the final year of his contract, and possibly his final NFL season.
