2017 NFL Draft: Raiders select Gareon Conley at 24 overall

New, comments

With a need in the secondary, the Oakland Raiders select the Ohio State cornerback as their first pick.

With the 24th pick in the 2017 Draft, the Oakland Raiders selected Gareon Conley from Ohio State. Conley, of course, made headlines recently for all the wrong reasons — being accused of sexual assault

The allegation centers around an incident that took place on Sunday, April 9 at the Westin in downtown Cleveland. Per Adam Schefter, numerous teams (including the Raiders) called Conley since the news broke earlier this week. For what it’s worth, Conley has not been charged with a crime and has denied the allegation.

With that said, on the football field the 6’0”, 195-pound corner will be an asset for the Oakland defense alongside Sean Smith and David Amerson. At the combine he ran 4.44 and jumped 37” vertically, leading him to be Mel Kiper’s third-ranked cornerback in the draft.

The hard part for Raider fans to swallow will be the fact that Reuben Foster, the linebacker from Alabama, was passed over in order to select Conley. Could it be that linebacker will be a position Oakland will draft in Round 2?
