Raiders countdown to kickoff: 83 is Cooper Helfet, who wore it best?

New, comments

Another day closer to the start of the Raiders’ 2017 season. Just 83 days remain. And with that we look at the fella wearing the number 83 followed by who the best to ever wear it.

TE Cooper Helfet

After three years in Seattle, this Bay Area (Redwood City) native joined the Raiders, signing to the team’s practice squad during last season.

The 6-4, 240-pound tight end was originally signed by the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent out of Duke in 2012. He had appeared in 23 games, starting four for Seattle the past two seasons, catching 25 passes for 315 yards and 2 touchdowns.

He will have his work cut out for him if he is to make the Raiders roster. Currently he is running third team at tight end.

Who wore it best: LB Ted Hendricks

If the Raiders retired numbers, this would probably be one of them. "The Mad Stork" joined the Raiders as a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time All Pro in his first six years with the Colts and Packers. The Raiders sent two draft picks to Green Bay to get him and Hendricks would spend the final 9 years of his career.

Hendricks added four more Pro Bowls with the Raiders and two more All Pro nods, but most importantly he was a key part of all three of the Raiders Super Bowl wins. He never missed a single game in his 15-year Hall of Fame career which saw him collect four rings (one with the Colts in 1970). He retired following the Raiders third Super Bowl win. That's how you go out on top.
