Just two seasons after signing a major free agent deal with the Chiefs, wide receiver Jeremy Maclin has been released. The move sent a shockwave through the sports world as no one saw that one coming.
Just a season ago, Maclin caught 87 passes for 1088 yards. He caught 8 touchdowns that season after the Chiefs didn’t get a touchdown from a wide receiver the season prior to his arrival.
Last season he appeared in just 12 games and saw career lows across the board including catches (44), receiving yards (536), touchdowns (2), yards per catch (12.2), catches per game (3.7), and yards per game (44.7).
Even still, he was arguably the team’s best wide receiver and figures to receive a good deal of interest on the market.
Maclin was a first round pick by the Eagles and was the third receiver taken on the 2009 draft in which the Raiders selected Darius Heyward-Bey at 7th overall, and the 49ers selected Michael Crabtree at 10th.
The Raiders already made up for their mistake in that draft by signing Crabtree and drafting Amari Cooper 4th overall in 2015. This offseason they signed Cordarrelle Patterson to try and round out the receiving corps.
Whether they were to try and add Maclin or not, should he exit the division, it would be one less talented receiver to deal with.
