Raiders top pick Gareon Conley to wear number 22

New, comments

Though he is still not practicing for the Raiders, Gareon Conley will be wearing number 22 once he does take the field according to a Raiders official. The team’s top pick was wearing number 2 throughout offseason practices.

That number was never going to stick because defensive backs aren’t allowed to wear single digit numbers. Typically you see corners wearing numbers in the 20s and 30s, but there were none available.

On the eve of the Raiders report day last Friday, the team released running back Taiwan Jones, who had worn number 22. With that number now available, Conley took it.

Conley wore number 19 and 8 while at Ohio State. Obviously he was not eligible to wear either of those numbers. Number 28 is taken by undrafted rookie Marcus McWilson.

No telling when Conley will take the training camp field for the first time. He signed his rookie deal the night before the first practice but is recovering from an undisclosed injury and was placed on PUP list.
