This is your 30-day warning (even if it is a little late). The Raiders season is coming soon. The team traveled to Arizona today to get ready to face the Cardinals Saturday night. You can expect to get a good glimpse of this exciting second year back currently wearing the number 30.
RB Jalen Richard
Jalen ‘Rocket’ Richard took the league by storm last season as an undrafted rookie out of Southern Mississippi. He went from tryout player to becoming the team’s primary change-of-pace back and punt returner last season.
In so doing, he averaged an astounding 5.9 yards per carry along with a respectible 9.0 yards per punt return. His 491 rushing yards was second on the team and he added three touchdowns. With this year’s crop of undrafted rookies trying to fight their way onto the roster, Richard is a shining example of a player who can make the most of his opportunity.
Who wore it best: RB Mark Van Eeghen (1974-1981)
Including Richard, there have been 7 players to wear the number 30 for the Oakland Raiders, but the best of them was 2-time Super Bowl champion running back Mark Van Eeghen. The second leading rusher in Raiders history with 5,907 yards under his belt is the easy choice to make (sorry Stuart Schweigert fans).
Van Eeghen came to the Raiders by way of Colgate College as the 3rd round pick in 1974. He was the leading rusher in the 1980 Super Bowl victory for the Raiders over the Eagles with 19 carries for 80 yards, and he was also a big part of the 1976 Super Bowl win over the Vikings carrying the ball 18 times for 73 yards.
