Saturday night the Raiders open the 2017 preseason in Arizona against the Cardinals. It’s the first glimpse we get of this year’s Raiders coming off a 12-4 season, making their first trip to the playoffs in 14 years.
That journey fell short due in large part to Derek Carr being lost to a broken fibula in week 15. The defense was exposed even more than they had been after that, making it a priority to bring in some upgrades this season.
Most of the defensive help is to come from the draft. Top two picks Gareon Conley and Obi Melifonwu are injured. Third round pick Eddie Vanderdoes should start and could see some extended time in the game. As should fifth round linebacker Marquel Lee.
Then of course, there’s the slew of roster hopefuls who will be battling to try and earn a spot on the roster this season. Their journey hits a milestone tonight in Arizona.
