Twenty days. That’s all we have until the Raiders season opener. That means it will be here before you know it. We’re already through two preseason games with just two remaining in Dallas and back in Oakland vs Seattle. Let’s look at who is donning number 20 these days in Oakland.
S Obi Melifonwu
The Raiders’ pick in the second round of the draft this year. He isn’t the secondary’s only hope, but they do have plans for him. Those plans included him playing the ‘Moneybacker’ spot this season which is a sort of hybrid safety/linebacker position which is something he has never played.
In order to make that transition, he needed a full offseason and training camp. So, the fact that he missed most of training camp puts a bit of a hitch in those plans in the short term.
As of the final day of camp, Melifownu was still not back to 100%, but with 20 days left until football that counts, he should be ready to go by then. The hope, however, is that he is ready at least by the final preseason game to get him some reps beforehand.
Who wore it best: S Warren Powers (1963-68)
Aside from having an awesome name, he was pretty awesome on the field as well. He played all six seasons of his NFL career with the Raiders. During that time, he intercepted 22 passes, including 21 in just four seasons from 1964-67. He helped lead the Raiders defense to its first Super Bowl appearance in 1967.
