49ers release LB Ahmad Brooks, should Raiders lure him across the Bay?

New, comments

Five years ago Ahmad Brooks signed a six-year, $37 million deal with the 49ers. With one year left on that deal and a cap hit of $6.15 million, the 49ers have been looking to move on from the 33-year-old linebacker.

They have been looking for a team willing to give them something in trade, but had no takers, so they will be releasing the former Pro Bowl outside linebacker according to the Sacramento Bee.

Update: The 49ers have now officially released Brooks.

Brooks is still a productive and consistent edge defender. He put up 6.0 sacks last season, only dipped below 6.0 sacks once (5.0 sacks in 2010) in his 8 years in San Francisco, and averaged nearly 6.5 sacks per season over that time.

Even with Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin in place, the Raiders lack pass rush depth. And they lack overall depth at the linebacker position.

They had signed former 49ers All Pro pass rusher Aldon Smith prior to the 2015 season, but nine games into that season, he was suspended indefinitely for repeated violations of the league’s substance abuse policy.

Veteran leadership among the Raiders linebackers is lacking at the moment. Their top performing inside linebacker is second year former sixth round pick, Cory James.

Reggie McKenzie has in the past moved outside linebackers to inside linebacker, so there’s an outside chance (so to speak) of that as well. McKenzie and head coach Jack Del Rio have made it clear they will be keeping an eye out for linebackers on the waiver wire.
