Taking the practice field for the Raiders was their first round pick cornerback, Gareon Conley . He comes off the PUP list, making his first appearance at practice since the first day of minicamp on June 13 when he suffered a shin injury.
With 12 days until the season opener, including a full week of practices, Conley figures to be ready for the team’s season opener on September 10 in Tennessee.
Selected at 24 overall, Conley’s return is key to helping the Raiders struggling secondary that finished among the worst pass defenses in the league last year. His coaches insist he was up to speed with the playbook prior to his injury and has kept up with his teammates doing mental reps.
That doesn’t mean he will be fully ready to become a major factor right from the start. His impact may take a little time as he gets back in football shape. Even still, having him available even for spot duty will be beneficial.
