Former Raiders OT Austin Howard lands on his feet with Baltimore Ravens and a pay raise

New, comments

It took about a week for Austin Howard to find a new home. And he got a raise in the process. The right tackle has signed with the Baltimore Ravens on a 3-year, $16 million deal.

He was set to make $4.5 million in base salary this season from the Raiders, which means he will get a $1 million raise with the Ravens. He also now has another long term deal. He had two years left on his deal with the Raiders. That’s what you call landing on your feet.

Howard was replaced this offseason by Marshall Newhouse and being that for the first time in his three years in Oakland the saving from releasing him was less than the dead money left behind ($1.5 million), it made sense to release him rather than pay him starter money as a backup. In the past few seasons he was an expensive insurance plan, but one the Raiders utilized every season with the injuries to Menelik Watson.
