Raiders release first unofficial depth chart of 2017: Observations

New, comments

In advance of the Raiders first preseason game this Saturday, the team has released their first depth chart of 2017. It looks like this:

Notable observations:

Marshall Newhouse is the first team left tackle while Donald Penn continues his holdout of training camp. Penn is not listed at all on the depth chart as he is currently on the Reserve/Did not report list and therefore does not count against the roster total.

With Newhouse at left tackle, 2016 7th round pick Vadal Alexander is the starting right tackle. He is backed by this year’s 4th round pick, David Sharpe.

Rookie third round pick Eddie Vanderdoes is listed at the first team defensive tackle.

The roster reads as a 4-3, not a 3-4 though the Raiders run a hybrid and are better equipped for that scheme.

Rookie fifth round pick Marquel Lee is listed as the starting middle linebacker with Cory James at weakside linebacker. In a 3-4, they would be the team’s inside linebackers with Bruce Irvin and Khalil Mack at the outside linebacker spots and Eddie Vanderdoes would be a DE along with Mario Edwards Jr.

Sean Smith is still listed as a starting cornerback despite running with the second team the past few camp days.

EJ Manuel is the second team quarterback. He was third team through all of OTA’s and moved into the second team spot in minicamps and has remained there ever since.

Keith McGill is listed as the second team free safety despite a foot injury that will likely have him out a couple months.
