There have been a few notable former Raiders to go onto acting careers after leaving football. First and foremost were Carl Weathers (Predator, Rocky) and John Matuszak (Goonies, Ice Pirates). You can add Nnamdi Asomugha to that list as he stars in the critically acclaimed film ‘Crown Heights’ which opens nationwide in theaters today.
The film is about Colin Warner (played by LaKeith Stanfield) who was falsely accused of murder and his friend Carl King (played by Asomugha) who fought for 21 years to prove his innocence and free him from prison.
Asomugha and Stanfield sat down for an interview with the men who they portrayed in the film, Carl King and Colin Warner, last month.
This is Asomugha’s second feature film role and his first starring role. He was previously in the feature film ‘Hi, My Name is Doris’ which stars Sally Field.
Prior to his acting roles, Asomugha had produced the film Beasts of No Nation. Asomugha is also a producer on ‘Crown Heights’.
His wife, Kerry Washington, has nearly 50 acting credits and currently stars as Olivia Pope on the show Scandal which is in its sixth season. She was also in the Jamie Foxx films Django Unchained and Ray.
Asomugha was a first round pick by the Oakland Raiders in the 2003 draft out of Cal. He spent the first 8 years of his 11-year NFL career in Oakland. In that time, he started 99 games, had 11 interceptions, was named to the Pro Bowl three times and All Pro twice. He finished out his career with the Eagles and 49ers and following the 2013 season, he announced he would retire as a Raider.
