Report: Raiders hire former 49ers DC Jim O’Neil as ‘Senior Defensive Assistant’

After a season out of football, Jim O’Neil is back and will be joining Jon Gruden’s staff in Oakland. The former Defensive Coordinator with experience coaching defensive backs and linebackers is said to be joining the team with the title of Senior Defensive Assistant, according to Adam Caplan.

O’Neil was most recently Defensive Coordinator in San Francisco during Chip Kelly’s one season as 49ers head coach. He joined Kelly’s staff after two seasons as Defensive Coordinator in Cleveland.

Here is what David Fucillo Niners Nation said of O’Neil.

O’Neil served as Chip Kelly’s DC, and it was mostly a disaster. Injuries were a major problem, but O’Neil seemed overwhelm for most of the year. As the injuries piled up, there were times it really seemed like he was about to break down in tears.

That doesn’t sound great, but you figure he is being brought in as another defensive mind in the room, much in the same way the Raiders brought in John Pagano last season and Al Saunders a few years back.
