This week Jon Gruden appeared on the Sean Salisbury Show on SB Nation radio to talk about his return to coaching. He added some more context to his line of thinking that ultimately led to his return to coach the Raiders.

Back on January 9th, following Gruden’s introctory press conference, Mark Davis revealed the moment Gruden let him know he was ‘All in’ on returning to coach the Raiders. That was Christmas Eve, just prior to the Raiders Monday Night Football game in Philadelphia on Christmas day.

It was less than a week before that Gruden says he had made his decision. He says his moment happened when he took the field for the Buccaneers Ring of Honor ceremony the previous Monday Night.

“When I was at the ring of honor reception in Tampa and I got around my old players, I really had something going inside of me I haven’t felt in a long time,” Gruden said. “My desire to return to coaching was really strong that night and fortunately a couple weeks later this opportunity presented itself and it’s like back to the future in Oakland, it’s really, really cool.”

Yeah, “a couple weeks later” (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).

And so, from the moment Gruden had found the final piece of his inspiration to the time he was officially introduced as Raiders head coach was three weeks. That’s fast.

Gruden went on to discuss what made the job so attractive to him at this point and more. Hear the interview here:
