Gruden is getting aggressive in trying to get the coaches he wants to join his staff. The latest has him trying to lure Lions Teryl Austin away with a promotion to Assistant Head Coach and defensive backs coach.
#Lions DC Teryl Austin's situation just got interesting: As he negotiates a deal with the #Bengals, the #Raiders are making a push to hire him & give him an assistant head coach title to coach DBs. Oakland hoping for an uber staff for Jon Gruden.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 8, 2018
This would be essentially the same job as John Pagano held last season for the Raiders.
The reports still have the Raiders hiring former Bengals DC Paul Guenther to the same position.
Austin has been the DC in Detroit the past four seasons. Prior to that he spent 10 of the previous 11 years as a defensive backs/secondary coach with the Ravens (2011-13), Cardinals (2007-09), and Seahawks (2003-06). He spend one season as the Defensive Coordinator at Florida in between (2010).
As Rapoport noted, Austin is negotiating a deal to go to the Bengals, replacing Guenther as DC. But the Raiders are making a push to get both. It would really be something if it could happen. Further proving that coaches respect Gruden as a coach and what he’s looking to accomplish in Oakland. Not to mention, the commitment the Raiders have made in Gruden along with reports all Raiders assistants will be receive 4-year deals instead of the standard 3, means job security which is very valuable.
Update: The Bengals closed in on Austin, making him their next defensive coordinator according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson and confirmed by Rapoport.
I'm told Teryl Austin is going to accept the #Bengals offer to become their defensive coordinator, per source.— Josina Anderson (@JosinaAnderson) January 8, 2018
