On this episode of high drafted Reggie McKenzie players sent away: Obi Melifonwu waived from injured reserve

If I were a Raiders drafted player from 2014 to 2017, I’d be feeling pretty uneasy right about now. Monday saw 2015 first round pick Amari Cooper traded to the Cowboys. Tuesday saw 2017 second round pick safety Obi Melifonwu waived from the team’s injured reserve.

That leaves just Derek Carr, Gabe Jackson, Jon Feliciano, Karl Joseph, Gareon Conley, and Marquel Lee as the only remaining drafted players who were on the opening day roster and remain so. Shilique Calhoun was waived and brought back on the practice squad before being promoted to the active roster. DeAndre Washington hasn’t been active on game day once this season.

Other highly drafted players to be sent packing since Jon Gruden arrived include Jihad Ward and Khalil Mack.

This move suggests that Melifonwu was healthy and is looking to try and play this season. He had been waived/injured before the season and no team signed him, which placed him on injured reserve. He has had three major injuries in two seasons with the team and appeared in just five games with one start.
