Another Reggie McKenzie draft pick is getting out of the way in favor of a Gruden acquisition. Gareon Conley has started the Raiders’ first four games this season. But that was while offseason free agent signing Daryl Worley was serving a four-game suspension. Worley returned this week and with just three practices with the team, he took over the team lead in snaps against the Chargers.
Worley led the cornerbacks with 49 snaps (77%) which is third on the team. Meanwhile Gareon Conley got the fewest snaps (13) among the cornerbacks, despite officially starting the game. Even Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (19) and Leon Hall (39) got more snaps than Conley.
Even with Conley opening last week’s win with a pick six, the big plays he is giving up can’t be overlooked. He gave up a 59-yard catch to Antonio Callaway last week against the Browns and gave up a 48-yard catch to Mike Williams in this game. Both ultimately led to touchdowns.
Worley on the other hand, has showed up well in this game, including making a couple very nice tackles, finishing second on the team with 8 tackles. We’ll have to wait until the film comes out to see how it did overall in coverage.
This is not the first time this season Conley has gotten fewer snaps than two other cornerbacks. In week three in Miami he was third behind Rashaan Melvin and Leon Hall. Every other week he has been top two in snaps among cornerbacks.
