Raiders week 11 NFL power rankings round-up: Oakland still with nowhere to go but up

It may not have been an embarrassing week for Derek Carr and company, but it wasn’t enough to change anybody’s mind on the current state of this team. For the 2nd week in a row it’s unanimous across the board, all of the power rankings makers we follow agree that the Raiders are the 32nd ranked team. In other words, they are still ranked as the worst team in the league.

Unless the Raiders manage to get a win this week there is little doubt that their spot on this list is pretty much set in stone. The good news is that this week’s opponent for Oakland is one of the only teams they could pass up on these rankings with the Arizona Cardinals only having 2 wins on the year and consistently ranked near the bottom of all of these power rankings.

On the flip side, if the Raiders lose to Arizona it will make it very difficult to envision them having any chance of getting out of the cellar for the rest of the 2018 season. Good times.

"If the Raiders are going to win another game, they could start by shielding their quarterback from getting hit repeatedly. Derek Carr got sacked another four times against the Chargers on Sunday, putting him on pace for 50 this season. In addition to dealing with all that pressure, Carr failed to create many chunk plays in the passing game or find the end zone. That makes 23 straight Oakland drives without a touchdown.

Historical note: With their record at 1-8, the Raiders are in danger of equaling the 1962 squad, which went a scintillating 1-13. That team played at Frank Youell Field, which was referred to as "The Erector Set" (with a capacity of 22,000 -- ridiculously small, even by 1960s standards). The coach then was Marty Feldman, not to be confused with Megadeth guitarist Marty Friedman (a really rippin' guitarist at that). Feldman started the season at 0-5 before being replaced by Bill Conkright. The following season, the Raiders hired a little-known Chargers assistant named Al Davis as head coach. They went 10-4. Davis' quarterback? Tom Flores. Yep, the same Tom Flores who went on to coach the Davis-owned Raiders to a pair of Super Bowl titles."

"Defining stat: Zero. As in no sacks, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries or interceptions made by the Raiders' linebackers during a 1-8 start this season, per the Associated Press. To say that the linebackers have given Oakland limited production would be a compliment. Because as the AP notes, 99 linebackers in the NFL have at least one sack this season, 36 have an interception, 55 have a forced fumble and 50 have recovered a fumble. Emmanuel Lamur, Marquel Lee, Tahir Whitehead, Kyle Wilber, Jason Cabinda and Nicholas Morrow? Not so much. -- Paul Gutierrez"

"There was a lot to digest in Mark Davis’ long interview with ESPN, but one important takeaway: It seems Davis is still fully behind Derek Carr. He seems to believe the cast around Carr hasn’t helped the quarterback, and that is fair. Now the bigger question: Does Jon Gruden feel the same way?"

"On Sunday, the Oakland Raiders travel to Glendale to face the two-win Arizona Cardinals. It's going to be a big game for Jon Gruden's project in putrid.

Because it may well represent their best chance to win another game this year.

After getting handled with bored disinterest by the Chargers in Week 10, the Raiders are 1-8. By rights the team ought to be 0-9—its lone win was a zebra-assisted overtime victory against Cleveland.

If the Raiders don't beat the Cardinals, they might lose out. They aren't likely to win on the East Coast at Baltimore in Week 12. Oakland's last five games include two meetings with the Chiefs that may lead Roger Goodell to consider instituting a mercy rule in 2019.

These Raiders are redefining the word nadir on a weekly basis. Every week is a new low for a team that was 12-4 in 2016.

The coach who was supposed to save the Raiders has wrecked them. And it may be a long time before the light is visible at the end of this tunnel."

"Jon Gruden is running out of words to explain all that’s wrong with his team. He will need more than better luck for the Raiders to return to respectability next year."
