Not much has been successful for the Raiders on defense this season, so it looks like Defensive Coordinator Paul Guenther is at the point of trying everyone and everything. He has a lot of young pieces to move around trying to find what works and Sunday he moved them around quite a bit.
Nicholas Morrow got the start saw a season-high 65 snaps (92%), the second most snaps among linebackers behind Tahir Whitehead. Meanwhile, previous starters Marquel Lee and Jason Cabinda saw just six snaps apiece on defense. We’ll have to wait for the coaches film to judge how Morrow performed overall, but he did tie for the team lead in tackles (7) with Whitehead.
Rookie Nick Nelson got the start at corner and led all cornerbacks with 65 snaps (92%). Meanwhile Daryle Worley — who has been the team’s best corner much of the season — was fourth among the corners with 37 snaps (52%). Nelson was getting burnt routinely by Chiefs receivers. Even in Worley’s limited snaps, he still finished third on the team in tackles (5).
Rookie P.J. Hall led all defensive linemen with 54 snaps (76%) — a career-high for him. Fellow drafted rookie Marurice Hurst — who has been the team’s best rookie — had just 22 snaps (31%), though that could be because he’s battling an ankle injury. Justin Ellis had just 12 snaps (17%) in his first game back from IR.
