Getting the official NFL started with a bang are the Raiders who have officially cut ties with cornerback David Amerson.

Amerson’s release saves the Raiders $6 million with no money left behind in dead money, making the decision somewhat of an easy one. His salary was to become guaranteed had he been on the roster as of Wednesday.

Once the Raiders’ top cornerback, the 26-year-old’s play dropped off last season. Then he was lost to a foot injury in week six and never returned.

The former second round pick was originally claimed by the Raiders off waivers from Washington two games into the 2015 season. He quickly became a revelation for the cornerback starved Raiders, intercepting 4 passes in 14 games, leading to a 4-year, $34 million extension. He would get just one season into that extension before being released.

He is just the first of what is expected to be several cuts by the Raiders this offseason, led by his fellow starting cornerback Sean Smith.

It could be a good year to need cornerbacks from the looks of this year’s free agent class.
