Monday the Raiders made a move that sent WR/KR Cordarrelle Patterson and one of their sixth round compensatory picks (210 overall) to New England. In exchange they received the Patriots’ 5th round selection at 159 overall, which now changes hands for the third time.
The 22nd pick in the round, it was originally the Chiefs pick. Then the Browns got it, traded it to the Patriots and now it belongs to the Raiders.
UPDATE: Tuesday the team sent FB Jamize Olawale to Dallas to move up from pick 192 in the sixth round to pick 173 which was a Cowboys’ compensatory pick. Giving them now two picks in the 5th round.
Prior to these moves, the Raiders didn’t have a 5th round pick. They had sent their 5th round pick (146) to the Seahawks in the deal to acquire Marshawn Lynch after he came out of retirement last offseason.
The trade of Patterson saved the Raiders $3.25, while Olawale’s trade saves $1.64 million for a total savings of $4.89 million between the two of them. What they lose is one of the best kick returns in the game (Patterson) and a little used offensive weapon at fullback. But it sounds like they weren’t in the Raiders’ plans so best to try and get something back for them rather than just cut them.
The Raiders still have 11 picks in the draft, they’re just a little better now. Here are those picks as of now:
Round 1, pick 10
Round 2, pick 41
Round 3, pick 75
Round 4, pick 110
Round 5, pick 159 (from NE)
Round 5, pick 173 (from DAL)
Round 6, pick 185
Round 6, pick 212 (Comp)
Round 6, pick 216 (Comp)
Round 6, pick 217 (Comp)
Round 7, pick 228
