A market was expected for Clive Walford once the Raiders waived him last Friday. And the 4th year tight end didn’t even make it past waivers. He was claimed by the Jets, who are sixth in the waiver order.
A former 3rd round pick by the Raiders out of Miami, Walford has one more year left on his rookie deal. He was touted as a do-it-all tight end out of college, but a series of injuries tripped up his development. Then he was buried on the depth chart behind Jared Cook and Lee Smith. Once the Raiders signed free agent Derek Carrier, Walford and his $2.1 million salary was cut loose.
If Walford can stay healthy, he still has some potential. It has only shown up in moments over the past three years in Oakland and a change of scenery could do him some good, if only because he figured to get more of a shot on a team thin at the position.
