Voluntary minicamp began this week, and Raiders receiver Amari Cooper has already made an impression on newly acquired veteran receiver Jordy Nelson.
“I think the first thing that stands out is just how explosive he is,” Nelson said in a press conference Tuesday. While the 9-year veteran is getting to workout next to Cooper for the first time, he has long admired his play. “I’ve been able to see him play the last two years...very explosive. But in the film room, smart guy.”
That compliment means something coming from Nelson who has long been considered one of the most savvy players at his position in the NFL. Lacking elite athleticism, the Pro Bowl wide receiver made a name for himself mastering the art of route running and preparing himself in the film room.
The 32-year-old receiver can still play at a high level, and was also brought in to help mentor Cooper who is coming off a disappointing third season. It will be interesting to see how Nelson impacts Cooper, but for now number 89 is making a positive first impression.
