2018 NFL Draft: Immediate reactions, grades to Raiders selection of DE Arden Key

Using their 89th and 217th overall picks, the Raiders traded up above the Carolina Panthers to select LSU defensive end Arden Key with the 87th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. How does the staff at Silver & Black Pride view the pick?

Key is a first round talent that dropped in the draft due to character concerns. But in the third round, the upside of this pick far outweighs the risk. The former LSU Tiger will have the opportunity to learn behind Khalil Mack and Bruce Irvin, and could one day become a productive starter across from Mack.

Arden Key was mocked all over the place this offseason, but usually near the end of the first round. For Oakland to get him here is highway robbery. Key was the best pure pass rusher in the SEC and abused offensive linemen and tight ends with regularity. However, his penchant for getting in trouble rubbed many teams the wrong way and thus, he slid down the draft list. If he keeps his nose clean, this could be the very best pick in the draft bar none.

Arden Key would have been a first round pick had he turned in a junior campaign similar to his sophomore season when he was body slamming QBs to the tune of 12 sacks. Key’s issues are well documented and the Raiders get him at a bargain.

Talent of a round 1-2 pick who goes at the end of the third round for character concerns. Can’t say too much negative about that.
