Awaiting contract extension, Khalil Mack not in attendance as Raiders begin offseason workouts

Today is the big day. When Jon Gruden finally met his new team. All save one. Not among the players at the Raiders facility today for offseason workouts is the best player on the team; Khalil Mack. This according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The offseason workouts are not mandatory, but Mack has never missed one and would normally be there.

Mack is heading into his fifth year option on his rookie deal with the team and is due an extension. His camp is said to be asking for north of $20 million per season on a 5-year extension which would put his contract over $100 million, making him the highest paid non-QB in the league.

Last offseason, the Raiders waited until June to extend his draft classmates Derek Carr and Gabe Jackson. Carr said he was told by Reggie McKenzie that the team wanted to get through the draft before giving him his extension. Then when that didn’t happen, he was clearly frustrated as he said he wanted to get it done and over with so he could focus on football.

For Carr, being there from the start and throughout offseason workouts is important as he is the quarterback. For Mack, it is less important and he may be unwilling to ride it out on faith as Carr and Jackson did.
