What condition Raiders position is in ahead of training camp: Quarterback

New, comments

We check on each Raiders position to give it a condition of either Strong, Stable, Unstable, Serious, or Critical.

NFL: Oakland Raiders-OTA Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The next time we see these Raiders take the field will be training camp when they really get down to the business of preparing for the season. From the looks of things, the quarterback position has its trio for the season.

Starter: Derek Carr

Depth: EJ Manuel, Connor Cook

From a roster standpoint, things are pretty much unchanged from this time last year. Derek Carr is the starter, of course, and is jelling with Jon Gruden’s new offense. EJ Manuel tested free agency, and then opted to return.

Cook has been getting most of the reps behind Carr in OTA’s and minicamp as Gruden tries to develop him, but he continues to have his issues with throwing interceptions. This time last year he looked the same and Manuel moved ahead of him by minicamp. I expect that to happen again by training camp.

Christian Hackenberg stopped in for a few weeks, but keeping four QB’s is tough when roster spots are at a premium. Given the tough choice, Gruden opted to hold onto Cook.

Condition: Stable

Carr should do well running Gruden’s offense, although we don’t know if it will take some time to be fluent in it. Manuel was passable filling in for Carr last season, but didn’t offer much confidence he could keep the team afloat, losing his only start. The Raiders need a young QB to develop and Cook has yet to prove he can be that guy.
