What condition Raiders position is in ahead of training camp: Tight end

New, comments

We check on each Raiders position to give it a condition of either Strong, Stable, Unstable, Serious, or Critical.

Starters: Jared Cook, Lee Smith

Backups: Derek Carrier, Pharaoh Brown, Marcus Baugh, Paul Butler

Leading off this group is the Raiders leading receiver last season with 688 yards. Even is a down season for the offense, Cook put up a career high 54 catches. There was some question whether he would be in Gruden’s plans this season, but he stayed and recently gushed about how well Cook his picking up the offense and his skillset.

Lee Smith returns as the team’s goon. The 6-6, 265-pounder is the intimidator of the Raiders offense. That’s the role that had him brought back for another season.

Clive Walford never developed and was cut after three seasons. He was replaced by Derek Carrier who has some versatility as a former wide receiver turned blocking tight end.

If there is an additional tight end spot after that, it’s an open competition between the killer B’s: Brown, Baugh, and Butler.

Condition: Stable

The Raiders know what they’re getting from Cook and Smith. What we don’t know for sure is if Carrier is an upgrade as the third tight end. I wouldn’t say it’s an elite group, but on paper, they’re a pretty decent looking trio.
