Starters: Donald Penn, Breno Giacomini
Backups: Kolton Miller, Brandon Parker, David Sharpe, Vadal Alexander, Jylan Ware, Ian Silberman
After missing the final two games of last season, Donald Penn is back. He has spent the offseason recovering from foot surgery, but there’s no reason not to expect he’ll be ready for camp. He had a bit of a down season last year, but it was on par with the rest of the line that struggled to acclimate to the new scheme. All the Raiders need is one more season from him. They have first round pick Kolton Miller waiting in the wings.
Tom Cable brought in Breno Giacomini, his old right tackle from a few years back. Giacomini now 32, a year removed from major back surgery, and coming off a season in which he gave up an unbelievable 81 pressures. That led the league by a wide margin. And he added 9 penalties to that.
When Giacomini was signed, people said it was not a big deal because he won’t be the starter. That’s not how it’s played out so far in the offseason. The team drafted two tackles and neither appears to be in line to start at right tackle this season. Miller has been lining up exclusively at left tackle and Parker is considered a project at right tackle.
It’s 2nd year former 4th round pick David Sharpe who has gotten the praise from his line coach. He has bounced between guard and tackle in the offseason, suggesting plans for him as a utility reserve.
The other three have an uphill battle on their hands. Alexander in particular will serve a four-game suspension to start the season.
He’s been injured at the end of each of the last two seasons and is 35. Will Miller be ready to step up as a rookie if he is called upon? At right tackle there are a few bodies but still a lot of questions. It’s possible reuniting with Cable is the answer for Giacomini. If not, the Raiders will either hope David Sharpe or Brandon Parker is ready to step up.
