These preseason games may not count toward a season win/loss total, but players are required to be available for them. As such, Khalil Mack risks a large fine for missing the game.
Mack is holding out for a contract extension. He has yet to show up for Raiders training camp and thus is expected to miss tonight’s first preseason game in Oakland against the Detroit Lions. Missing this game carries with it an $814,000 fine per the CBA which states that players are fined a game check not just for missing regular season games, but preseason games as well.
The reason the fine is as large as it is, is because Mack’s set to make $13.8 million this season. That puts his game checks at $814K apiece.
This isn’t an automatic fine, though. It’s at the team’s discretion to levee the fine, which you would figure they would only exercise it should his holdout extend into the regular season and/or he never come to terms on an extension.
