Former Raiders CB Sean Smith receives early release from jail

Early this morning, while most NFL teams are practicing, gearing up for the 2018 season, Sean Smith was getting released from jail. Smith was released by the Raiders this offseason and shortly thereafter was sentenced to a year in jail on assault charges after beating up his sister’s boyfriend. He got out after five months for good behavior and immediately announced his release on Twitter.

The nine-year pro spent the past two seasons in Oakland. He was likely to be released by the team this offseason regardless of the status of his case because his high salary didn’t match up with his performance level and cutting him carried no dead money.

Smith noting that he’s headed to the gym would suggest the 31-year-old is looking to get back in shape in order to try to catch on with an NFL team in the near future. It’s possible he will have a suspension from the NFL waiting for him, making a return difficult.
