Raiders waive injured 2017 second round pick Obi Melifonwu, sign free agent cornerback Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie

After weeks of Jon Gruden saying Obi Melifonwu was “still being evaluated” for a mystery injury he suffered in camp, the Raiders have now officially waived him.

The 2017 round two pick missed all but five games last season with injury and was twice placed on injured reserve.

It’s still possible Melifonwu could be placed on injured reserve for the Raiders should he clear waivers. But it speaks volumes that the Raiders weren’t interested in waiting until after the roster cutdown to place him on IR.

Melifonwu was drafted to be the answer to the Raiders’ lingering questions about covering tight ends. He was to team up with Karl Joseph to be the long term safety tandem. That obviously didn’t happen.

The move to waive Melifonwu was made in order to add free agent cornerback Dominique Rodgers Cromartie. The 32-year-old cornerback adds to a crowded, but questionably talented group of corners.
