Raiders training camp day eight report: Gabe Jackson expected back Monday, plus updated timetables for Gareon Conley, Donald Penn

Saturday was family day at Raiders training camp. It was a scorcher, so it was the right day for it, considering Gruden gave 17 veteran players the day off from practice. There wasn’t a lot going on at practice in front of what was probably the largest fan contingent outside of the day they had 6K at Napa’s Memorial Stadium last week.

With so many players not practicing, there was no point in scanning for who was and wasn’t on the field. Absences are usually for injury reasons, but not this day. What we did get is a timetable for the return of some of the injured players.

Among the players who were out and about but not practicing was Gabe Jackson who had missed the previous couple practices with an undisclosed injury. Gruden said just that Jackson “got knocked around.” He also said he expects his big guard back Monday after the day off.

Also expected back Monday is safety Erik Harris who had surgery on a broken finger on Friday.

There is no clear timetable for Donald Penn, but Gruden said he thinks Penn is close to returning. Penn is still recovering from offseason foot surgery and has been on the PUP list along with Eddie Vanderdoes for all of camp.

As for Conley, Gruden said essentially that he is on his initial return timetable.

“I saw him out here yesterday at the walk-thru. I was really encouraged by that,” said Gruden. “You just keep that timetable as it is it will be a couple weeks. We’ll see what happens, we’ll update you when we know something. But he was out here at the walk-thru and that’s a real good sign yesterday.”

Conley suffered a hip injury on the first day of camp, so he’s been out for about a week. If Gruden is talking about two weeks from his injury, Conley could be back for the final few days of camp, after the team returns from their first preseason game against the Lions.

The players have Sunday off, then return Monday with three practices before that first preseason game. The final two of those practices on Tuesday and Wednesday will be scrimmages with the Lions ahead of their game on Friday.
