It’s been known for some time that the Raiders don’t currently possess a single player from Reggie McKenzie’s first two drafts as Raiders GM in 2012-13. This offseason saw the largest purge of McKenzie picks to date.
Since Jon Gruden arrived, he has been getting rid of McKenzie drafted picks at a fever pace. Here is the list of picks from 2014-17 who were on the Raiders roster last year and who are not now:
Khalil Mack, Round 1, 2014 – Traded to Bears
Mario Edwards Jr, Round 2, 2015 – Waived in final cuts, claimed by Giants
Jihad Ward, Round 2, 2016 – Traded to Cowboys
Obi Melifonwu, Round 2, 2017 – Waived/injured, placed on injured reserve
Clive Walford, Round 3, 2015 – Waived last March
Eddie Vanderdoes, Round 3, 2017 – Placed on Physically Unable to Perform list
Keith McGill, Round 4, 2014 – Not re-signed in March
Connor Cook, Round 4, 2016 – Waived in final roster cuts
David Sharpe, Round 4 2017 – Waived day after roster cuts
Cory James, Round 6, 2016 – Waived in May
TJ Carrie, Round 7, 2014 – Not re-signed, signed free agent deal with Browns
Dexter McDonald, Round 7, 2015 – Waived/injured among final roster cuts
Vadal Alexander, Round 7, 2016 – Released after failure to report to camp
Shalom Luani, Round 7, 2017 – Trade to Seahawks for 7th round pick
Jylan Ware, Round 7, 2017 – Waived in final roster cuts
Elijah Hood, Round 7, 2017 – Waived in May
Treyvon Hester, Round 7, 2017 — Waived Monday (this is an update)
That’s 17 former Reggie McKenzie draft picks over four years gone in a matter of months. That is an absolute massacre. It’s more than the actual number of McKenzie draft selects who still remain on the team.
