FA Revelations

Now that brass has shown they’re acquiring FA assets for Derek Carr, and attempting to jump start an offense in need of experienced playmakers by obtaining Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams, it appears the strategy for this upcoming draft is to tap into this stellar crop of incoming defensive talent. It’s also very possible now that the Raiders could resign TE Jared Cook, at a position that traditionally has a longer learning curve than other positions offensively. With Green Bay addressing their DE issues with their FA signings (Smith and Smith), it’s almost a lock they’ll be looking to poach a TE (Fant or Hockenson) in round 1, leaving hopes of the Raiders landing one of the Iowa studs at #24 or #27, in serious question. For this reason, should Cook return for 2019 and beyond, it’s almost certain the Raiders will go all in on defense in the early rounds of April’s draft.

One possible FA signing the Raiders should consider is Justin Houston, who’s not far removed from a 22 sack campaign and still a productive 29 yrs old. Other than maybe adding another few tier 2 defefensive players, brass could put all focus on supercharging their historically inept defense with some excellent young prospects.

This should at least freshen things up for Mocksters, whilst we ponder what can or will be, come April 25th. I’ll be redrafting my mocks based on this philosophy.

P.S. Does anyone else get the feeling Gruden is giving Derek Carr every chance to prove his worth in 2019 with the FA moves made thus far? Seems like this will truly be a career defining season for Carr, good or bad.
