Former Raiders S Obi Melifonwu overshadowing receivers at Patriots camp

A lot has been made of Tom Brady turning no-name receivers into superstars. But it looks like this year the Patriots are turning defensive players into star receivers.

This sort of ball-hawking performance is what the Raiders counted on when they drafted Obi Melifonwu out of UConn a few years ago. But his time with the Raiders was fraught with injury and underwhelming play, and the Raiders got virtually no return on the investment with him.

I’ve seen this movie before, of course. The Patriots fanbase will get all manner of hyped up about Obi and his potential and athleticism, and then he’ll be on the injury report by Week 2. Still, it’s fun to see a guy that we all had such high hopes for make the Patriots offense look like a bunch of geeks. The first days of training camp are usually when the offense has the upper hand on the defense (as we’ve seen with the Raiders this weekend) but Melifonwu is dominating so far.
