Uh oh. The Raiders could have a punting issue this Sunday. Today, shortly after the injury report was put out, they added AJ Cole to it with an injury to his kicking foot and is now officially questionable for Sunday’s game against the Chiefs.
Unlike most positions on the team, there is no backup punter. That means they would likely have to make a decision on him by tomorrow and if it turns out Cole can’t go, they would need to sign another punter at the last minute.
If they have to add another player, they would need to cut someone to make room. The question is if that player would be Cole or someone else.
The undrafted rookie has proven himself to be a damn good punter since training camp when he beat out 2018 5th round pick Johnny Townsend for the Raiders punting job. If he were waived/injured they would have to hope another team didn’t swoop in to sign him away.
But we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. If he turns out to be ok, then no need for any roster shuffle.
Update: The East Bay Times is reporting that Cole’s foot has checked out and he will play Sunday against the Chiefs.
